A greenway project in Harriman got a big boost Wednesday from the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

TDOT awarded a grant to Harriman worth more than $447,000 to help complete phase one of the city's riverfront greenway project.

Phase one will include the construction of nearly 1,500 feet of paved trail starting near Roane Street and ending at Morgan Avenue.

City leaders hope the project will encourage residents to be active and enjoy the great outdoors.

"That's the purpose, to be able to have people to view the river and the beauty of walking in that kind of an environment," said Bobby Tidwell, acting city coordinator.

Phases two and three, set to be completed in the future, will extend the greenway even further.

The greenway will provide access to an existing park and soccer fields along the river.
