Roane Co. delays 'In God We Trust' signs

The words "In God We Trust" will not hang on a Roane County building -- at least not right now.

The Roane County Commission voted to delay a proposal to add the national motto to the county courthouse and inside the commission chamber.

Commissioner Randy Ellis proposed the idea originally , but the proposal never went through committee. Monday they voted to send it to committee per standard procedure.

"When we don't go to those committees and we go around those committees to get something done, then to me we've circumvented that system," said Roane County Commissioner Stan Moore.

"We have debates in government; that's what we're supposed to do, debate issues," said Ellis. "We'll take a vote, you know we vote to see whose elected to office. This is just another part of that process. It's going to be brought back up and I'll also be there fighting for it to happen again next month."

Anderson County approved a similar measure for their courthouse last year, while a proposal at the state level passed in the Senate, but not the House.
