4 Roane Co. schools offer free meals to all students
News

This year all students at some Roane County schools can eat meals at school at no cost.

Students enjoy meals that comply with national school nutrition standards.

Four schools, including Bowers Elementary School, offer free breakfast and lunch thanks to a national grant. The program allows all students to receive the meals regardless of economic status without having to fill out additional paperwork.

"Every child has the option to come in and eat a healthy meal with us. A nutritious breakfast, a nutritious lunch. School nutrition is support for the classroom. What we want to do is send kids to the classroom ready to learn and not hungry," said Linda Wilson, Roane County Schools coordinator of school nutrition.

Roane County Schools leaders say they will see how the program works this year. If other schools meet the criteria, next year they will consider expanding the program's reach in Roane County.
