(WBIR, Kingston) - Hundreds of families in Roane County will now have a Thanksgiving dinner thanks to the Kingston Police Department and Hands of Mercy Enterprises.

Wednesday morning, the two organizations teamed up to hand out turkeys and all the trimmings to more than 800 families.

This is the sixth year for the food giveaway, and it all started when one of the officers noticed a need at Hands of Mercy Enterprises.

"When he got to discussing how many people and how many families they help throughout the week, it was close to Thanksgiving, so we thought it would be a good idea, and a good community thing, to help families in Roane County," said Kingston Police Chief Jim Washam.

Roane County churches and schools plus individuals donate food and money to make the basket distribution possible.
