Homeless Student Report shows startling numbers

School systems across the state are seeing more students come through their doors without basic necessities, according to new report from the Tennessee Comptroller's Office of Research and Education Accountability.

The Homeless Students in Tennessee Public Schools report shows startling numbers of students classified as homeless.

In our viewing area, two school systems stood out as having especially high numbers of homeless students.

The date and time for the auction have not yet been set.

The minimum bid for the Dyllis Elementary property will start at $70,000.

The minimum for Walnut Hill is $25,000.

The single parcel of property will start at $5,000.

Both schools closed within the past few years.

The Roane County Teachers' Supply Closet wrapped up the final week of its donation drive with a roller-coaster of emotions and a happy ending.

Some East Tennessee community college students now have an easier path to completing their bachelor's degree.

Wednesday, the presidents of Roane State Community College and Middle Tennessee State University signed a dual admissions agreement.

That will allow qualified Roane State students to be enrolled at both schools, while they complete their associate's degree at Roane State.   They can also continue to pursue their bachelor's degree at MTSU.

TVA ash cash funds Roane County school upgrades

TVA is spending more than a billion dollars to clean up the site of the 2008 ash spill at the Kingston Fossil Plant.  The environmental disaster unleashed an avalanche of more than a billion gallons of sludge in Roane County.

While crews have made considerable progress in removing ash from the Emory River and clearing the ash-filled landscape, an investment from TVA has also provided a considerable upgrade to the county's schools.

School supply donations down, asking community for help

School supply donations down, asking community for help

An effort to help teachers in Roane County keep their classrooms stocked with supplies is in need of community help.

The Roane County Teachers' Supply Closet collects supplies and monetary donations to help teachers with basic supplies to help free up school resources for other classroom projects. The teachers can then "shop" for the items for free.

The shopping event will be held next Wednesday, September 26, but the Roane Alliance says so far their donations are down dramatically from years past.
